Hardworking, Curious, Understanding, Persistent

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
Music enthralls me with its ability to take me away from my academic, technical self and help me embrace my more abstract, creative side. After watching videos of legends like Slash, Van Halen, and Don Felder effortlessly playing complex chords and riffs, I became obsessed with learning how to master one of my favorite instruments: the guitar. Even after playing the guitar for nine years, I still find myself going down musical rabbit holes to teach myself new, challenging guitar solos and melodies from songs I hear on my own time and from what my friends show me. I have been known to often spend hours in my room perfecting different guitar techniques to create unique melodies, quitting only when red cracks on my fingers make me physically unable to play any longer. My passion for music has helped me understand my fascination with engineering more deeply. Mathematics plays a key role in both engineering and music, two fields that may initially seem worlds apart from one another but actually integrate well within each other when looked at through an arithmetic lens. For instance, musical rhythms must be counted and maintain a logical flow to sound appealing, and engineering phenomena are built upon mathematical foundations such as the universal laws of physics. I am eager to strengthen my grasp on how to apply concepts from music to electrical engineering/computer science and vice versa. I seek to infuse the structure and function of machines with the elegance and expression I have learned from the arts, while also building dance routines that show the stylistic mastery and technical precision characteristic of engineering principles. The UC schools' curricula have the ability to combine my multidisciplinary interests and allow me to approach engineering problems in novel ways that exhibit creativity and originality, which never would have been possible had I not picked up the guitar a decade ago and been introduced into the world of music.
