How to Approach

This essay is your opportunity to highlight two key points: your passion for your chosen major and why Georgia Tech's specific offerings are integral to your academic and professional journey. Here's how to approach this essay: .

  • Articulate Your Passion and Influences

Your essay should begin with a narrative arc that captures your excitement for your intended major. Instead of presenting generic statements, delve into particular experiences or moments that sparked your interest in your field. For instance, one student might share a personal story about a problem they wish to solve with their knowledge, while another could discuss the influence of a mentor or a pivotal event. Offer vivid anecdotes or examples that showcase your dedication and unique perspective. Avoid broad, unfocused statements and instead:
Weak: "Engineering has always attracted me because of my knack for problem-solving. My excellent grades in math and physics only confirm my suitability for the major."
Strong: "When a devastating tropical storm decimated our local shoreline, I was inspired to curate a community-led barrier restoration project. Witnessing the tangible impact of environmental engineering on shoreline preservation compelled me to commit to this path. It's a field where my technical skills and environmental ethos converge, guiding me toward a future of ecological restoration projects."
  • Connect Your Interests to Georgia Tech's Resources

After setting up your background and interest, seamlessly transition to how Georgia Tech's specific programs, clubs, or professors stand out as perfect facilitators for your aspirations. Research the school's unique resources and be detailed in describing how they correspond with your plans:
Weak: "Georgia Tech's recognized civil engineering program and numerous student organizations will boost my academic journey."
Strong: "Georgia Tech's Invention Studio, with its cutting-edge tools and collaborative atmosphere, is precisely where I can refine my environmental engineering projects. Additionally, the opportunity to learn under Professor Jane Doe, whose work in sustainable urban development inspires me, aligns perfectly with my career vision."
  • Project Your Future with Georgia Tech's Springboard

Conclude your essay by projecting a vision of how your undergraduate experience at Georgia Tech sets the foundation for your long-term goals. Paint a picture that extends beyond college, showing foresight and ambition:
Weak: Weak: "A civil engineering degree from Georgia Tech will undoubtedly set the stage for a successful future in my field."
Strong: "At Georgia Tech, I will not only develop eco-friendly engineering solutions but also establish a solid groundwork for my goal to spearhead nationwide coastal rehabilitation initiatives after graduation."

Your essay should be tailored to reflect a genuine and deep-rooted passion for your major while illustrating a coherent and strategic plan with Georgia Tech as the centerpiece. Show, don't tell, and ensure every word reaffirms your story's authenticity and your dedication to your chosen path.

Georgia Tech Essay Examples

In 2017, I watched Google’s artificially intelligent AlphaZero completely dismantle Stockfish, the most powerful chess engine of its time. This was my first exposure to AI and as a lifelong chess player, I was left in awe. I could not believe the level of creativity a computer program was capable of displaying. AlphaZero made very human moves. It sacrificed pieces, committed to long-term strategies, and played with imagination. To me, the incredible computational power was the least exciting aspect of this chess AI. Rather, I was enthralled by its ability to thoroughly understand the state of the chess match and meaningfully act on its analysis.

The College of Computing provides a unique subset of tools that perfectly align with my ambitions in AI and machine learning. My prior experience in AI has been in using neural networks as dataanalysis tools and predictors. However, I have always been intrigued by Professor Isbell’s philosophy of developing interactive AI agents. Intelligent systems without the capacity to deliberately connect with the outside world are worthless. Just as in humans, social viability gives intelligence purpose. In Reinforcement Learning, I will learn to develop agents with the ability to make intelligent decisions. Through working with the legendary pfunk research group and Professor Isbell’s Lab for Interactive Artificial Intelligence, I hope to further efforts in creating systems that possess a human approach to fostering external relationships.

Additionally, Machine Learning for Trading allows me to pursue algorithmic trading, a field at the intersection of two of my core interests – finance and computing. I truly believe in the idea that machine learning models should be eternally learning and accumulating previously acquired knowledge. Learning algorithmic trading at Georgia Tech will uniquely allow me to explore this idea of lifelong machine learning in the training of predictive financial models.
To me, architecture represents the perfect balance of art and science. I have always enjoyed experimenting with art and design, a passion passed down from my grandfather. I also enjoy spending time in nature camping and hiking, experiences which have sparked my appreciation for science and the environment. I would love the opportunity to pursue these interests by studying architecture in college.

My experience as a mentee at an international architecture firm has also deepened my interest in studying architecture. Throughout the year, during my mentorship, I have learned more about the day to day responsibilities of an architect.

Researching case studies and plans created by the firm for various projects has emphasized to me the degree to which an architect acts as a leader and coordinator between engineers, designers, clients, and other collaborators. As a leader in Scouts, school, sports, and clubs, I would be able to apply my leadership skills in a professional setting. During the remainder of my mentorship, I look forward to visiting build sites as I follow projects through the design process, learning more about different types of architects, like those specializing in health, landscaping, and urban design.

For my final mentorship project and presentation, I plan to focus on the relationship between architecture and sustainability, since preserving and protecting the environment is important to me. My mentorship has made me very excited about how pursuing architecture would allow me to continue learning about design and science while finding ways to make buildings more efficient, with lower carbon emissions, less wasted water, and less energy consumption.

As weather patterns worsen with climate change, I hope to contribute to the design of new, sustainable buildings that will better withstand natural disasters. Studying architecture in college would help me to build a foundation to achieve these goals.
