Why are you interested in attending Columbia University? We encourage you to consider the aspect(s) that you find unique and compelling about Columbia.
Columbia serves as the intellectual anchor of the most diverse city in the world. Its unparalleled educational opportunities are integrated with the acknowledgment and acceptance of being part of a broader, inclusive community. This human-oriented ideology gives my ambitions in computer science and AI a much greater purpose. There is significant discrimination in AI. Many AI implementations utilize a black-box model that results in unexpected and often overlooked inequities. For example, job-screening programs may disfavor those with disabilities. Studying computer science and AI through an intellectually and culturally diverse lens at Columbia motivates me to create models that promote egalitarianism. I am using recurrent neural networks at my research internship to analyze the sentiment of usergenerated Twitter posts. The ability of simple computer models to identify complex patterns in human writing fascinates me. I am excited to study at the world’s most comprehensive computer language-understanding program in the context of social networks at Columbia’s Natural Language Text Processing Lab. At NLTPL, I wish to further explore the use of transformer networks to create agents able to effectively interact with humans using language. Additionally, Columbia’s interdisciplinary approach allows me to learn from other linguistic disciplines to better train language processing AIs.

I peered over the board, shaking the dice in my hands and praying for anything but an 11. The dice clattered and came to a stop. 11. My sister leapt up with glee, taunting me as I grudgingly dragged my character from Atlantic Avenue to Park Place, a property practically sagging under the weight of four houses. “$1400!” she exclaimed, laughing at my paltry $370. I bit my tongue instead of hurling...

I have lost track of how many times I have rejected this essay, and, although it can be discouraging to re-draft it so many times, I don’t give up. So, I open up a new document on my computer, clear my head, and start fresh. I close my eyes and let my mind wander, stepping back out onto a familiar, windy beach. As the sky greys, clouds bring in light showers, scattering vacationers seeking she...
