Kind, Determined, Curious

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.
I have been yearbook editor for the past year and a half. Being a leader constitutes more than just the duties that must be fulfilled. It requires people skills, patience, communication, and commitment. Diligence is important as a leader. Being a leader does not mean you can give up and leave your peers to complete the duties needed to be done. This also does not mean you can boss others around. Leading means you must find a kind approach to delegating tasks and completing the common goal. As a leader, I am inclusive of all staff members, give advice where needed, ensure deadlines are being met, and that pages look good. Good pages include colors, good writing, good pictures, and alignment of everything. During the time I have been an editor, I have seen people grow. Returning staff members from last year have increased creativity and possess better writing skills than before. This may be a result of either the advice I have given or skills they had before but were intimidated to use because of prior editors. During this time, one of the three editors began doing the bare minimum. As frustrating as this is, rather than following her and giving up, it is important to remain motivated. I have had to pick up additional work, such as editing and proofreading extra pages, creating extra templates, and doing additional designs. My yearbook advisor has expressed gratitude to me for remaining positive and rather than retreating, showing the true qualities of being a leader. I also have not “shunned” the other editor. I understand life happens and maybe there is a personal reason she can no longer put much effort into yearbook. As a result, we have worked to attempt to resolve this by asking our teacher for support. We have also asked our other editor to put in the work she needs to be putting in. I continue to contribute to this group effort by picking up work that needs to be done, completing my own duties, providing help to others, and being a good leader.

I peered over the board, shaking the dice in my hands and praying for anything but an 11. The dice clattered and came to a stop. 11. My sister leapt up with glee, taunting me as I grudgingly dragged my character from Atlantic Avenue to Park Place, a property practically sagging under the weight of four houses. “$1400!” she exclaimed, laughing at my paltry $370. I bit my tongue instead of hurling...

I have lost track of how many times I have rejected this essay, and, although it can be discouraging to re-draft it so many times, I don’t give up. So, I open up a new document on my computer, clear my head, and start fresh. I close my eyes and let my mind wander, stepping back out onto a familiar, windy beach. As the sky greys, clouds bring in light showers, scattering vacationers seeking she...
