Describe a time when you disagreed with someone.
A friend once told me that I am too stubborn. A conversation about Soviet Russia had rapidly descended into a debate over whether statistics touted by capitalist countries could be trusted. I refused to be wrong. I endlessly dug up documents to bolster my assertion. Even though I was slowly realizing I was wrong, I wouldn’t give up. This is when he uttered that critique that deeply impacted me: I realized I needed to accept defeat; after all, there was no shame in being wrong--only learning. After I conceded, I received from him, too, the compliment I value most as of today: he told me he admired the way I stood up for what I believed in, even if what I believed in was wrong. My doggedness was and still is one of my defining traits, and, ever since then, I have always spoken my mind (and admitted loss).

I bit my tongue instead of hurling...

I have lost track of how many times I have rejected this essay, and, although it can be discouraging to re-draft it so many times, I don’t give up. So, I open up a new document on my computer, clear my head, and start fresh. I close my eyes and let my mind wander, stepping back out onto a familiar, windy beach. As the sky greys, clouds bring in light showers, scattering vacationers seeking she...
