The essence of science is best described by Jacob Bronowski: “ask an impertinent question, and you are on the way to the pertinent answer”. Through asking impertinent questions about biology and chemistry, I have discovered these sciences are pertinent to everything. Growing up in Florida near the beach, I didn’t know why hermit crabs adorned themselves with shells. With a few Google searches, though, I learned of the process of adaptive evolution and its applicability to all life. I could now explain why every organism inherited its traits. During my later years in Massachusetts, my focus shifted to humans. Pondering why my hairs raised when it was cold led to understanding that every organ in the body worked together to maintain homeostasis, igniting my interest in surgery--an intimate look into the operations of human bodies. I now knew that every bodily reaction was connected in some way, both chemically and physically. Biology and chemistry inspire me to constantly ask questions and learn. I cherish every modicum of knowledge I gain, and I believe that Columbia has the resources I require to continue connecting biology and chemistry to the world, from state-of-the-art laboratories to networks of renowned scientists.

I peered over the board, shaking the dice in my hands and praying for anything but an 11. The dice clattered and came to a stop. 11. I bit my tongue instead of hurling...

I have lost track of how many times I have rejected this essay, and, although it can be discouraging to re-draft it so many times, I don’t give up. So, I open up a new document on my computer, clear my head, and start fresh. I close my eyes and let my mind wander, stepping back out onto a familiar, windy beach. As the sky greys, clouds bring in light showers, scattering vacationers seeking she...
